CPCS is working with NEPAD-African Union Development Agency (AUDA) to conduct a Detailed Scoping Study ("DSS") of Vision 2063 Africa Integrated High Speed Railway Network ("AIHSRN"). AIHSRN is considered as one of the enablers of AU Agenda 2063 and is expected to facilitate economic and physical integration of the Continent by connecting capital cities and economic hubs across Africa, by year 2063.
This assignment, the DSS, is the first of the three phases of the AIHSRN initiative. The main objectives of this assignment are to identify 2-3 pilot HSR projects to proceed further to showcase high speed rail (HSR) success stories on the African continent, conduct scoping studies on the selected pilot projects, prepare them for the next steps (Phase 2), and program the remaining projects (i.e. proposed HSR links) that form part of AIHSRN as an AIHSRN Master Plan.
On April 10th and 11th, 2019, NEPAD-AUDA and CPCS held the first expert validation workshop in Nairobi to present and discuss the project prioritization framework applied to rank the proposed HSR links and the recommended pilot projects. The pilot projects, once approved, will be further assessed during this assignment for their potential viability.
