Inauguration of the Sepik River pilot shipping service –

Community Water Transport Project

This project, led by CPCS Principal Dr. Joseph Jones and carried out for the Papua New Guinea Department of Transport, commenced in late 2007. The overall objective of the project is to reduce poverty in the maritime provinces by introducing subsidized water transport services. The project also seeks to improve small craft safety through improved legislation and the installation of jetties. The pilot shipping service was introduced on the Sepik River in July 2009. Service on the Huon Gulf/Oro Coast route and the New Guinea Island routes has also been introduced. The project is also helping with the introduction of a Small Craft Safety Act to improve the safety of small boats. We are also planning the construction of up to 200 jetties throughout the maritime provinces.
